Iridescent is an inspiring program that introduces underserved
children and their families to real-world, hands-on science experiments, with topics ranging from cardiovascular mechanics to the physics of rollercoasters.
The fun, interactive workshops are led by engineers and scientists who serve as volunteer instructors.
The activities not only help students grasp the subjects being taught better than just reading from a textbook, they also introduce them to the wonder of discovery and innovation. Moreover, many students who have participated in the workshops have commented that "Science isn't as scary now," and even that "Engineering is kind of cool."
In doing the experiments alongside the students, families have the chance to see that their child, grandchild, niece, or nephew could pursue a career in science or engineering. "A lot of kids in this neighborhood are not exposed to a lot of things," said one parent, adding that Iridescent has given his son "the opportunity to broaden his mind about what's out there in life."
